![]() MAY 24TH, DON MISS OUT FROM 6:00-9:00pm, 8625 Camp Bowie West, Ft. Worth, Texas 76116. 35+ Awards including Best of Show Car and Truck, Best Late Model, Under Construction, Special Interest, Managers Choice. Door prizes, 50 /50 pot, old time rockin’ roll music. See Details Below!! ![]() ![]() AS WE PULLED UP AT THE PYTHIAN HOME it was quiet and no sign of anyone around until Chris, the director’s other half, and Mr. Jerry, dorm dad, came out to help us get the electricity and get set up. Then came “our” Boy Scout Troop #214 from Haslet. The Boy Scouts and Troop Leaders have been with us for two shows a year for about three years. They know just what to do and do it well. The guys sold 50/50 pot tickets, they raised over $300.00. While other scouts kept the clip boards filled and ready at the registration table. JUST BEFORE 11:30 we started to see the kids peeping around the corner of the buildings and several going out to play basketball. Then........ Here they all came!!! This is what we had been waiting for, Mr. Celvin, dorm dad, took over at the registration table, Mr. Jerry cooked hot dogs, he took care of all the food. Sharen had a chance to get out among the cars and get some pretty awesome pictures, AND I PLAYED WITH THE KIDS. THIS WAS ONE OF THE FIRST SHOWS that I really did not have to do anything, but play! We did have a couple of little mishaps, but hey it was all done by the kids. Sorry about the broken topper on the trophy. But it was the kids fighting over that trophy. WE HAD SEVERAL NEW KIDS COME into the home in the last week. They seemed to fit right in. I had the pleasure of spending some time with a couple of newer children. They are really great kids, all the kids seemed to be very mannerly, even though a couple got carried away in the candy bowls. But that was bribery at work! The bribes did pay off for several of the rodders. We had candy everywhere, toys, flip flops, stuffed animals, cookies etc. The kids had to stop and take a break and go back to the dorms to put away there treasures but came right back out again. AS THE DAY MOVED ON it began to warm up and so did the kids. Ms. Lisa was there for the first half of the show and had to go do the girly things with her daughter and a couple of the others that had prom dates that night. The games got started and the entertainment began, from the hookey-pookey, limbo, hoola-hoop, chicken dance, bunny hop, toss the balls on the rack and bubble gum contest there was laughter in the air. Then we went on into the money grab and then came the trophies. The minute we were all waiting for to see how much of the bribery had really gotten thru to some of the little ones. It was so amazing that a couple of the little ones had to point out their choice to me. Guess what? Their choice was a person instead of a car. Then I had to go see what that person was driving. The guys really did bribe some of the little ones, but it all worked out just the same and was great fun for everyone. THANK YOU GUYS FOR COMING OUT and showing your support for the home and the kids. PHOENIX TRANSMISSION, SIMMS LUMBER COMPANY, WEATHERFORD NATIONAL BANK and HAGERTY INSURANCE - TOM HADDLEY AGENCY. We appreciate all of you for sponsoring this show. Special thanks to SONIC-CAMP BOWIE for the hot dogs, MRS. BAIRD’S for the buns. And you guys for all of the generous donations for the necessity items for the home. IT IS BECAUSE OF ALL THE DONATIONS that have been made to the home that the home has jut installed new windows in the dinning area. They had to replace a freezer and totally re-do the swimming pool. Last Christmas you guys bought all new mini blinds for the dorms and front entry. These were all things that desperately needed work on. Remember the home is run off of donations only. With donations they can do a lot of things and without the donations they have to live in the condition that the home is in. These children are our future, a brighter today for the kids mean a brighter future for all of us. If you would like to make a donation please mail directly to Texas Pythian Home, 1825 Bankhead Road, Weatherford, TX 76086. Please note on the check or money order D & D Rockin’ Rods or just “car show donation”. So they know how you heard about the home and their needs. They also need volunteers so it you are interested let them know. Thanks to BOB MANNEY for your $200.00 donation to the home; LONE STAR VINTAGE CHEVY CLUB for your $500.00 check and STEVE WRIGHT for the $150.00 donation back to the home of the 50/50 pot. Again the home is always in need of sponsors. You can sponsor a child on the second weekend of each month. Birthday sponsors for a child, you and your friends and family come to the home and have a party for that child. Donations to a child’s bank account; sponsor a child with clothes for back to school or summer. You are always welcome to come out one or both of our car shows at the Pythian Home and sponsor by participating with us. BO AND PAT REDDING, a big follower of ours, was at the rescue of another broken down vehicle. Bo and Pat are really great people and love the hot rods, they are always at our beck and call. Pat helps us with all the kids games at all of the shows and Bo is always on stand by in case a vehicle breaks down or we loose a screw in a trophy. Remember if you are having car trouble, look for the under construction El Camino with two smiling faces and a dog! PHOTOS ARE POSTED!! Sharen was cut loose with the camera, instead of working the table. And I had a chance to play with the kids and use my camera. We are a little over 220 pictures to send to Ellie and Calvin in Arkansas, our web masters. Give us a few extra days and we will try to post as many as possible. Remember if you want a picture off of the web site, then print it, it's your for the taking. EVERYONE AT THIS SHOW WAS A WINNER. But some of the ones that bribed better than other took away the trophies. Just a couple were: BEST CAR ~ DON & JUNE NEWHOUSE in a 1939 Chevy sedan color-poppy BEST OF SHOW TRUCK ~ SONNY DOWDY in Mr. Custer a 1975 Chevrolet C 30 white from Dorm A DORM B was MURPHY WALKER in a silver 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W 30 DORM C ~ 1934 black Ford coupe owned by HARRY PHILLIPS DORM D ~ was a purple 1957 Corvette owned by DOUG & PAULINE BURNETT. DORM E ~ 1974 Chevy Nova owned by BRUCE WALLISA. IT WAS DRAWN TO OUR ATTENTION that SANTA LARRY was at this show, out of costume, Larry walked away with TWO awards. DO you think the kids are trying to get in Santa's good graces?? Several of the children recognized “Santa” when he pulled up in his truck. Several of the kids told me that they knew Santa was there to check up on them. I wonder who put that bug in their ear? WE ARE WORKING ON A COUPLE OF EVENTS where some of the Pythian Home Children can come to the car shows with their dorm and participate with us in other car shows. If you see some familiar smiling little faces around our table at some of the events you will know where they came from. They are not ALL MY grandkids, although I would claim everyone of them. THE NEXT CAR SHOW for us is at the SONIC ON CAMP BOWIE, fourth weekend of the month…. In the mean time cruise safely and always look in your rearview mirror, we may following you to a car show. ~ Dale & Donna ![]() |
